Construction Information

In regards to all construction projects and infrastructure improvements, thru traffic will be detoured around the construction site while local access to properties will be maintained as much as possible.  Temporary driveways to businesses may be utilized to restore access as soon as possible once construction has advanced beyond the immediate area.  Water service may be disrupted periodically during the day throughout construction; however attempts will be made to provide 48 hour notice prior to doing so.  Due to construction activities within the right-of-ways it is inevitable that lawns, trees, plants, and landscaping will be disturbed or removed.  Measures will be implemented to minimize these impacts and return them to existing or better conditions if possible.

Safe Routes to Schools Project
The City of Boone was awarded a grant for approximately $250,000 to improve passenger routes to the middle school and Franklin Elementary and then to encourage students to walk or bike to school.
Construction of the improvements will begin July 12 at the Middle School and should be completed by the end of August.  The project includes repairs to sidewalks, installation of ADA complaint pedestrian ramps and increasing awareness of school crossings with paint striping and new signage.  Improvements are planned in the following areas:
·         Middle School south to the intersection of South Jackson Street and Prairie Avenue
·         Aldrich Street from 1st Street to existing sidewalk on the west side of the Middle School
·         Clinton Street from 1st Street to Aldrich Street
·         1st Street from Greene Street to Clinton Street
·         Greene Street from 7th Street to 1st Street (High School to Page Elementary)
·         7th Street from Crawford to Greene Street
·         Crawford Street from 21st Street to 7th Street (Franklin Elementary to the High School)
The Contractor performing the work was awarded to Jasper Construction Services, Inc. out of Newton, IA.  Residents along the project route should expect sidewalk closures and construction equipment in the right-of-way.  Once the sidewalk improvements are completed, surface restoration, including seeding, will be performed.
When the improvements are completed, students will be encouraged to walk or bike to school activities and events.  Walking and bicycling to and from school can contribute towards the development of a lifelong habit of physical activity.  Also, leaving the car at home reduces traffic congestion nears schools and helps to improve air quality.
